Setup guide

Pre-workshop setup guide.

The accounts and software you need before Session 1, so we can start building on the day instead of setting up.

Before you begin

This guide walks you through the accounts and software you need before the workshop. Everything here is straightforward — visit a website, create an account, or install an app. No command-line or technical skills needed.

Stuck on a step? Email sam@logic8.com.au and we'll help you before the session.

  • Estimated time

About 10 to 15 minutes to complete every step below.

  • Please arrive early

Arrive 10–15 minutes early to Session 1. We've set aside time to help anyone who got stuck.

  • Claude Code is installed together

We install Claude Code as a group at the start of Session 2. You do not need to install it yourself.

Get your tools ready

Both are quick. Do them in any order — but it's easiest to start with Claude Pro.

  1. Sign up for Claude Pro

    ~5 min

Claude Pro gives you access to Claude Desktop and Claude Code, the AI tools we use throughout the workshop. $20 USD/month (about $32 AUD).

    1. Open your browser and go to claude.ai
    2. Click Sign Up (top right)
    3. Choose Continue with Google (easiest) or enter your email
    4. If using email, check your inbox for a verification link and click it
    5. Once logged in, click your name or profile icon (bottom left)
    6. Click Upgrade to Pro
    7. Enter payment details and confirm ($20 USD/month, ~$32 AUD)
    8. You should now see "Pro" next to your name

No lock-in. Cancel anytime after the workshop.

  2. Install VS Code

    ~5 min

VS Code is the free code editor where you'll work in Session 2. It's published by Microsoft and used by millions of developers. Download from code.visualstudio.com.

    Mac

    1. Go to code.visualstudio.com
    2. Click the blue Download button
    3. Open the downloaded .dmg file
    4. Drag Visual Studio Code into your Applications folder
    5. Open VS Code from Applications
    6. If you see a security warning, click Open

    Windows

    1. Go to code.visualstudio.com
    2. Click the blue Download button
    3. Click the Windows 10, 11 button
    4. Open the downloaded .exe file
    5. Accept the agreement and click Next through each screen
    6. On Select Additional Tasks, make sure Add to PATH is ticked
    7. Click Install, then Finish
    8. Open VS Code to confirm it launches

Am I ready for Session 1?

Confirm all three. If anything's off, email sam@logic8.com.au — we'll help before the session.

  • Claude Pro

Logged in at claude.ai with "Pro" next to your name.

  • VS Code

Installed and opens on your computer.

  • Laptop

Fully charged — or bring your charger.

What we install together in Session 2

  • Claude Code — the AI coding assistant that runs in your terminal and inside VS Code.
  • The Claude Code extension for VS Code — so you can run Claude Code directly inside the editor.

You do not need to install these yourself — we walk through it together with step-by-step guidance.

Stuck somewhere?

No worries — we'd much rather sort it now than on the day. Send a quick email and we'll get back to you.
